Welfare Sunday - Message from The Bishop

This Sunday is officially our Welfare Sunday where, throughout our Diocese, we are reminded to support welfare work through the life and witness of the church.  In all our churches, welfare work and the caring for the needy and the poor happen all the time.  Through our cell groups and home groups, we extend help to members in genuine need.  We respond to give relief when disaster strikes ie. flooding in the interior or when some of our members meet with an accident, or when a member is sick and needs treatment.  But for bigger projects, our Diocese has a Welfare and Disaster Relief Board to respond to greater needs like the international disaster relief recently in New Zealand and Japan.  We had given help to Myanmar earlier. The Welfare Board has regular projects within our Diocese: the giving of practical help to the needy ( ie. walking sticks), supporting the education projects to children of foreign workers, the on-going help given to lift the economic and social condition of our interior poor with Canon Lidis Singkung serving under the Welfare Board in a full-time capacity, the giving of relief when parts of our Diocese are hit with any kind of disaster, and annual medical camps to the interior and remote churches.   All these need funding.  Though all our churches do welfare on a local level, the larger scale welfare work of the Diocese needs our support.  Our Diocese Standing Committee gives the Board an annual grant.  But that is not sufficient. So one Sunday in a year, we ask all our members to be involved in this important work of the church by giving a special offering.  I assure you that the money given is always put to good use and the Board can do more, only if we as a church gives strong support to them.  We will pray.  We will get involved.  We will give generously.  May I ask you to use the special envelops given out to you to give, as unto the Lord.  May the Lord bless our Welfare and Disaster Relief Board in their work for Him.
