Tawau is situated at the south-eastern part of
Sabah. The Chinese forms the bulk of the population of this coastal town.
Since the early 19th century, the Chinese parents were interested
in sending their children to receive childhood education. This tradition has
been handed down to the present age where most working parents are desirous
to send their children to child care center for formal and informal
education.
At the turn of the 20th century,
and in response to the rising needs of the parents and the community, a
Playschool cum Daycare center were established. The institution is also used
as open door for the teaching of Christian values and moral education. In
1993, The St. Patrick’s Playschool cum Daycare Center was officially
launched and it is located at and sharing with the compound of St. Patrick’s
Church which also provides ample parking bays for parents.
Since its establishment, the center has been
blessed with the following dedicated and hardworking principals :
Mdm. Shirly Kwan (1993 – 1995)
Mdm Chin Vui Tzi (1996 –1997),
Mrs. Irene Lee (1998 – 1999)
Mrs. Dora Cheang (2000 – 2001) and
Mdm Connie Then , currently serving there with
her team of 13 teachers.
In the beginning we had only two teachers and
a small group of children using Montessori concept of cognitive and physical
stimulation. We strive to improve by constantly updating our teaching aids
and getting suitable methods in nurturing the children.
Each year we experience more and more children
coming to our playschool.
The year 2003 was a significant and
breakthrough year for us. From a single block of building, we have extended
to double block of building. We are now having seven rooms which are able
to carter for 160 children.
We are taking children from 18 months to 4
years old. To date, we have 13 teachers in the morning for 6 classes of 149
children and 7 teachers for the daycare session of 65 children.
